Laser Hair Reduction in Surat: How Many Sessions Do You Actually Need?

Laser hair reduction is one of the most popular treatments at Skin First — and one of the most misunderstood. Patients often come in having been told they need exactly "6 sessions" by another clinic, only to find results vary widely. Here's the truth from a dermatologist's perspective.

How Laser Hair Reduction Works

Laser hair reduction works by targeting the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle with concentrated light energy. This heat destroys the follicle's ability to regrow hair — but only when the follicle is in its active growth phase (called the anagen phase). Since not all follicles are in this phase simultaneously, multiple sessions are needed to catch each one at the right time.

So How Many Sessions Do You Really Need?

The honest answer is: it depends. Here are the key factors:

1. Body Area

  • Upper lip / chin — 8-12 sessions (hormonal influence means regrowth is more stubborn)
  • Underarms — 6–10 sessions (faster results, coarser hair responds well)
  • Full legs / back — 8–10 sessions (larger area, varied hair density)
  • Arms — 8–10 sessions

2. Your Skin Tone and Hair Colour

Laser works best when there is high contrast between skin tone and hair colour — i.e. dark hair on lighter skin. For patients with darker skin tones (common in Surat), we use specific laser wavelengths like Nd:YAG that are safe and effective without risking burns. Blonde, grey or white hair does not respond to laser — it lacks melanin.

3. Hormonal Factors

Conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) cause hormonal hair growth that is harder to treat. These patients often need more sessions and periodic maintenance. Dr. Jeet Gandhi always screens for hormonal causes before starting treatment.

4. Consistency of Sessions

Sessions must be spaced 4–6 weeks apart for the face and 4–8 weeks for the body. Skipping or delaying sessions allows missed follicles to re-enter growth phases, reducing overall effectiveness.

What to Expect at Skin First

  • A detailed consultation and skin assessment before any treatment begins
  • A patch test to confirm your skin's response to the laser
  • Treatments performed by trained staff under dermatologist supervision
  • Use of cooling technology to ensure comfort during the procedure
  • Typically 10–60 minutes per session depending on the area

Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before and after each session
  • Apply SPF 50 sunscreen daily throughout your treatment course
  • Do not wax or thread between sessions — shaving is fine
  • Mild redness for a few hours after treatment is normal

The Bottom Line

Most patients in Surat achieve 70–90% permanent hair reduction after a full course of sessions. The exact number depends on your individual profile. At Skin First, we give you an honest, personalised estimate at your first consultation — not a one-size-fits-all number.

HIFU vs Anti-Wrinkle Treatments — Which Is Right for Your Skin Type?

Two of the most common questions we get at Skin First are: "Should I get HIFU?" and "What about anti-wrinkle treatments?" Both are excellent anti-ageing options, but they work in completely different ways and are suited to different concerns. Here's how to decide.

What is HIFU?

HIFU stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It works by delivering focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin — targeting the SMAS layer (the same layer surgeons target in facelifts). This triggers collagen production and causes gradual skin tightening and lifting over 2–3 months.

HIFU is best for:

  • Sagging or loose skin on the face, neck and jawline
  • Loss of facial definition
  • Early jowls
  • Patients who want a non-surgical "lift" effect
  • Ages 30–60 with mild to moderate skin laxity

What HIFU feels like:

Most patients feel a warm, tingling sensation during the procedure. There is no downtime — you can return to normal activities immediately. Results appear gradually over 8–12 weeks as new collagen forms, and last 12–18 months.

What Are Anti-Wrinkle Treatments?

Anti-wrinkle injectable treatments work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause expression lines — such as frown lines between the brows, forehead lines and crow's feet. They do not add volume or lift — they smooth.

Anti-wrinkle treatments are best for:

  • Dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions (frown lines, forehead lines, crow's feet)
  • Patients in their late 20s to 50s
  • Preventive treatment to stop wrinkles deepening
  • Those wanting a quick, minimal downtime solution

What to expect:

Results appear within 5–7 days and last 3–6 months. The procedure takes 15–20 minutes with minimal discomfort. No downtime required.

HIFU vs Anti-Wrinkle — Key Differences

  • HIFU = lifts and tightens loose skin by rebuilding collagen deep within
  • Anti-wrinkle = relaxes muscles to smooth expression lines on the surface
  • HIFU lasts longer (12–15 months vs 3–6 months)
  • Anti-wrinkle works faster (days vs months)
  • They are often combined for comprehensive anti-ageing results

Which Should You Choose?

If your main concern is sagging skin or loss of definition — HIFU is your answer. If it's lines and wrinkles caused by movement — anti-wrinkle treatment is more appropriate. Many of our patients at Skin First benefit from both, used together for complete facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Noopur Jain will assess your skin, understand your concerns and recommend the right approach at your consultation. There is no single right answer — it depends entirely on your skin, your age and your goals.

Carbon Laser Facial vs HydraFacial — What's the Difference?

Two of our most requested treatments at Skin First are the Carbon Laser Facial and HydraFacial. Both leave your skin glowing — but they work very differently and are suited to different skin types and concerns. Here's everything you need to know before booking.

Carbon Laser Facial — The "Hollywood Peel"

The Carbon Laser Facial (also called the Carbon Peel or Hollywood Laser Peel) involves applying a thin layer of liquid carbon to the face, which is then targeted by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The laser vaporises the carbon along with dead skin cells, excess oil, blackheads and bacteria inside the pores.

Best for:

  • Oily and acne-prone skin
  • Open pores and blackheads
  • Active acne and post-acne marks
  • Dull, uneven skin tone
  • Mild pigmentation

What to expect:

  • Painless — feels like a light snapping sensation
  • 30–45 minutes including carbon application and laser
  • Immediate glow — skin looks clearer and brighter the same day
  • No downtime — mild redness settles within hours
  • Recommended every 3–4 weeks for best results

Carbon Laser Facial is particularly effective in Surat's humid climate where excess oil production and clogged pores are a year-round problem.

HydraFacial — Deep Hydration and Extraction

HydraFacial is a multi-step treatment that uses a patented vortex technology to cleanse, exfoliate, extract impurities and infuse the skin with serums — all in one session. It is non-laser, non-invasive and suitable for virtually all skin types.

Best for:

  • Dry, dehydrated or dull skin
  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • Sensitive skin that can't tolerate stronger treatments
  • General skin health maintenance
  • Pre-event glow (wedding, party, function)

What to expect:

  • Completely painless and relaxing
  • 45–60 minutes
  • Immediate plumpness, hydration and cleansing
  • Less downtime — makeup can be applied the same day or a day after
  • Recommended monthly for maintenance

Which One Should You Get?

  • Oily, acne-prone skin with open pores? → Carbon Laser Facial
  • Dry, dull or dehydrated skin? → HydraFacial
  • Combination skin? → Both can be alternated monthly
  • Before a big event? → HydraFacial gives a faster glow
  • Acne scars and pigmentation? → Carbon Laser Facial

Can You Combine Both?

Yes — many of our patients at Skin First alternate between the two. HydraFacial one month, Carbon Laser the next. This gives you the benefits of deep cleansing, pore refinement, hydration and brightening throughout the year. Dr. Noopur Jain will recommend the right schedule based on your skin type and concerns.

PRP vs Growth Factor Therapy for Hair Loss — Which Should You Choose?

If you've been researching hair loss treatments in Surat, you've likely come across both PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) and Growth Factor Therapy. They're often mentioned together — and for good reason. Both harness the power of growth factors to stimulate dormant hair follicles. But they are not the same treatment, and the differences matter.

What is Plasma Therapy?

It is a treatment where a small amount of your own blood is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injected into the scalp. Platelets are rich in growth factors — proteins that signal follicles to wake up, repair and grow.

Advantages:

  • Uses your own biological material — no risk of allergic reaction
  • Well-studied with years of research
  • Effective for androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium and alopecia areata
  • Results typically visible after 3–4 sessions

Considerations:

  • Involves a blood draw (needles) — not ideal for those with needle anxiety
  • Results depend partly on the quality and concentration of your own platelets
  • Requires multiple sessions spaced 4 weeks apart

What is Growth Factor Therapy?

Growth Factor Therapy uses concentrated growth factor formulations — either derived externally or from advanced biological preparations — delivered into the scalp. Unlike Plasma therapy which relies entirely on your own blood's platelet concentration, Growth Factor Therapy can deliver a standardised, highly concentrated dose of specific growth factors shown to stimulate hair follicles.

Advantages of Growth Factor Therapy:

  • Standardised concentration — consistent results session to session
  • Can be tailored to target specific growth factors most relevant to your hair loss pattern
  • Suitable for patients who prefer to avoid blood draws
  • Often combined with microneedling for deeper penetration

Which is More Effective?

Both treatments have strong evidence supporting their effectiveness for hair loss. The "better" option depends on your individual situation:

  • Plasma Therapy is ideal if you prefer an entirely autologous (from your own body) treatment with a long track record
  • Growth Factor Therapy is ideal if you want a standardised, needle-blood-free option or if your Plasma Therapy results have been inconsistent
  • Combining both is an option some patients benefit from, particularly for more advanced hair thinning

What Does Dr. Jeet Gandhi Recommend?

At Skin First, we assess each patient individually. Dr. Jeet Gandhi will evaluate your hair loss pattern, blood parameters, scalp condition and medical history before recommending the most appropriate treatment. There is no single best answer — the right treatment is the one that matches your specific type of hair loss and your body's response.

Early treatment always gives better results. Hair follicles that have been dormant too long cannot be revived. If you are noticing hair thinning, act now.

Hair Fall in Surat's Hard Water — Is It the Water or Something Else?

If you live in Surat and are experiencing hair fall, chances are someone has told you: "It's the water." Surat's municipal water supply is known to be hard — high in dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. And yes, hard water can affect your hair. But it's rarely the only cause, and blaming the water alone means missing a diagnosis that needs treatment.

What Does Hard Water Actually Do to Your Hair?

Hard water deposits calcium and magnesium on the hair shaft. Over time, this causes:

  • Dryness and brittleness — the mineral deposits prevent moisture from entering the hair shaft
  • Dullness — mineral buildup makes hair look lifeless
  • Scalp irritation — mineral deposits on the scalp can cause itching and flakiness
  • Tangling and breakage — brittle, dry hair snaps more easily
  • Reduced effectiveness of shampoos and conditioners — hard water prevents products from lathering properly

These effects cause breakage — which looks like hair fall — but it's technically not true hair loss from the follicle.

When Is It NOT Just the Water?

This is the critical question. If you are seeing actual hair thinning (not just breakage), a widening parting, patches of hair loss or your ponytail getting noticeably thinner — hard water alone is not the cause. You may have:

  • Androgenetic alopecia — genetic pattern hair loss that is progressive and needs early treatment
  • Telogen effluvium — stress, illness, post-COVID or post-pregnancy hair shedding
  • Iron deficiency anaemia — extremely common in women in Surat, often missed
  • Thyroid dysfunction — both hypo and hyperthyroidism cause significant hair loss
  • Vitamin D or B12 deficiency — common in Gujarat's population due to dietary patterns
  • PCOS (PMOS) — polycystic ovary syndrome is a major cause of hair loss in young women

How to Tell the Difference

A simple test: if you travel outside Surat for 2–4 weeks and your hair fall significantly reduces, water may be a contributing factor. If the shedding continues regardless of location, something systemic is more likely.

At Skin First, Dr. Jeet Gandhi always recommends a blood panel including iron studies, thyroid function, vitamin D, B12 and hormonal profile before attributing hair loss to any single cause.

Practical Tips for Hard Water Hair Care in Surat

  • Install a shower filter — these remove most calcium and magnesium before water reaches your scalp
  • Use a chelating or clarifying shampoo once a week to remove mineral buildup
  • Rinse hair with filtered or boiled cooled water as a final rinse
  • Deep condition weekly — hard water strips natural moisture
  • Avoid hot water — it worsens mineral deposition and dries the scalp

When to See a Dermatologist

If your hair fall has been going on for more than 3 months, if you are noticing thinning (not just shedding), or if home remedies haven't helped — please see a dermatologist. Self-treating hair loss without a diagnosis wastes time and allows treatable conditions to progress.

Book a hair loss consultation at Skin First Skin & Hair Clinic, Vesu, Surat — Dr. Jeet Gandhi will get to the root cause.

Mole, Wart, Skin Tag or DPN — How to Tell Them Apart (and When to Get One Removed)

Patients frequently come to Skin First pointing to a small growth on their skin and asking: "What is this?" The good news is that most benign skin growths are harmless. But knowing what type you have matters — both for choosing the right removal technique and for ruling out anything that needs medical attention.

Moles (Melanocytic Naevi)

Moles are clusters of pigmented cells (melanocytes) that appear as brown, tan or black spots. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough.

  • Usually appear in childhood or early adulthood
  • Most are completely harmless
  • Should be monitored for changes in size, shape, colour or bleeding
  • Removed when cosmetically bothersome or when showing suspicious changes

When to be concerned: Use the ABCDE rule — Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour variation, Diameter over 6mm, Evolution (any change). See a dermatologist immediately if a mole changes.

Warts (Verrucae)

Warts are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They are rough, raised growths that can appear anywhere on the body — most commonly on hands, fingers and feet.

  • Contagious — can spread by touch or shared surfaces
  • Rough, cauliflower-like texture distinguishes them from moles
  • Can appear as single growths or in clusters
  • Treated with chemical cuaterization, electrocautery or laser at Skin First

Skin Tags (Acrochordons)

Skin tags are soft, flesh-coloured growths that hang off the skin on a thin stalk. They are extremely common and entirely benign.

  • Most common in areas of friction — neck, armpits, groin, under breasts
  • More common with weight gain, diabetes and pregnancy
  • Painless unless irritated by clothing or jewellery
  • Removed quickly and easily by electrocautery or radiofrequency at Skin First

DPN (Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra)

DPN are small, dark, slightly raised bumps that appear predominantly on the face — particularly the cheeks and around the eyes. They are very common in people with darker skin tones and are genetic in origin.

  • Multiple small dark bumps on the face, neck and chest
  • Completely benign — but cosmetically concerning for many patients
  • Very common in South Asian and African skin tones
  • Treated effectively with electrocautery or laser at Skin First

Which Removal Method is Used?

  • Electrocautery — uses electrical current to burn and remove the growth. Quick, precise, minimal scarring.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) removal — gentle and precise, ideal for delicate areas like around the eyes.
  • Chemical Cauterization — Painless method, using chemicals to burn off the lesions
  • Laser removal — for pigmented lesions and DPN.

The right method is chosen by Dr. Noopur Jain based on the type, size, location and number of lesions.

Is Removal Safe?

All removal procedures at Skin First are performed by qualified MD Dermatologists under sterile conditions. Before any removal, we examine the growth carefully — and if there is any doubt about a lesion's nature, we recommend biopsy first. Your safety is always the priority.

Tattoo Removal in Surat: What to Expect Session by Session

Tattoo removal has become one of the most requested procedures at Skin First. Whether it's a change of heart, a professional requirement, or preparation for a new tattoo — laser tattoo removal is safe, effective, and achievable. Here's a complete, honest guide to what you can expect.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

We use a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser — the gold standard for tattoo removal. The laser emits short, intense pulses of light that are absorbed by the tattoo ink particles. This energy breaks the ink into tiny fragments that the body's immune system then gradually removes through the lymphatic system. Each session breaks down more ink, progressively fading the tattoo.

Session by Session — What to Expect

Session 1

The laser is calibrated to your skin tone and tattoo ink colour. You'll feel a sensation like a rubber band snapping against the skin. After the session, the area will look frosted (whitish) for 10–20 minutes. Mild redness, swelling and occasionally pin-point bleeding are normal. The tattoo may look darker initially — this is normal and will fade.

Sessions 2–4

Noticeable fading begins. Skin heals between sessions — it's important to wait the full recommended interval.

Sessions 5–8+

Significant fading. Professional tattoos (done by a tattoo artist with quality ink) take more sessions than amateur tattoos (done with pen ink or low-quality ink) because professional inks are more deeply deposited. By this stage most patients see 60–80% clearance.

Final Sessions

Ghost images (faint outlines) of the tattoo may remain after the main ink is cleared. Additional sessions address these. Complete clearance is achievable for most black ink tattoos on lighter skin tones. Multi-coloured tattoos may retain traces of certain pigments.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

The honest answer depends on several factors:

  • Ink colour — Black responds best. Green, yellow and light blue are hardest.
  • Ink depth and density — Professional tattoos have deeper, denser ink and need more sessions.
  • Your skin tone — Darker skin tones require lower laser settings for safety, which may mean more sessions.
  • Age of tattoo — Older tattoos often fade faster as ink has already partially dispersed.
  • Location — Tattoos on extremities (hands, feet) fade slower due to lower circulation.
  • Your immune system — A healthy immune system clears ink fragments faster. Exercise, hydration and not smoking help.

At Skin First, Dr. Jeet Gandhi will assess your tattoo at consultation and give you a realistic estimate of sessions needed — typically 5–12 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart.

Aftercare — Critical for Good Results

  • Keep the area clean and dry for 24 hours
  • Apply prescribed healing ointment as directed
  • Do not pick at scabs or blisters — this risks scarring
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treated area throughout the course of treatment
  • Apply SPF 50 on the area daily
  • Stay well hydrated and exercise regularly — this supports ink clearance

Is It Safe for Darker Skin Tones?

Yes — when performed by a qualified dermatologist using the appropriate laser settings. At Skin First, we have experience treating all Indian skin tones safely. The Nd:YAG laser we use is specifically suitable for darker skin. We always perform a patch test before the first full session.

What Happens at Your First Consultation at Skin First Clinic, Vesu

Many patients come to Skin First Skin & Hair Clinic feeling a little nervous — unsure of what to expect, whether their concern is "serious enough" to see a dermatologist, or worried they'll be pushed into expensive treatments. This guide walks you through exactly what a first consultation looks like.

Before You Arrive

  • No special preparation is needed for most skin consultations
  • If coming for a hair or scalp concern, come with your hair down (not tied) so the scalp can be examined properly
  • If you're on any medications, bring a list or photo of the packaging
  • If you have tried any creams, treatments or home remedies, make a note of them
  • No makeup is ideal if you're coming for a skin concern — the dermatologist needs to see your skin as it is

Step 1 — Registration and History

You'll be asked to fill in a brief patient form .

Step 2 — The Consultation with the Dermatologist

Dr. Jeet Gandhi or Dr. Noopur Jain will speak with you about your concern in detail. They'll ask questions to understand the onset, triggers, progression and impact on your daily life. At Skin First, we believe in taking time to listen — most consultations are 15–20 minutes, not a 3-minute handoff.

Step 3 — Skin or Scalp Examination

The dermatologist will examine the affected area carefully. For skin concerns, this may involve a dermoscope (a specialised magnifying device that allows detailed examination of skin lesions). For hair concerns, a trichoscopy may be performed — a dermoscopic examination of the scalp that can reveal the health of your hair follicles without any needles or discomfort.

Step 4 — Diagnosis and Explanation

The doctor will explain what they've found, what the likely diagnosis is, what is causing the problem, and what options are available for treatment. At Skin First, we believe in honest, clear communication. We will tell you what is needed, what is optional, and what realistic outcomes look like.

Step 5 — Treatment Plan

A personalised treatment plan is discussed with you — including any procedures recommended, prescription medications, skincare products and lifestyle advice. You will never be pressured into any treatment. We will explain costs transparently before you make any decision.

What Skin First Does Not Do

  • We do not recommend unnecessary treatments
  • We do not use untrained staff to perform procedures
  • We do not give unrealistic promises about results
  • We do not rush consultations

MD Dermatologist vs Beautician vs Skin Clinic — Who Should You See in Surat?

Surat has no shortage of places offering skin treatments — from parlours and beauty salons to skin clinics, medispas and dermatology practices. With so many options and very different price points, it can be hard to know who to trust with your skin. This guide explains the differences clearly.

Beautician / Beauty Salon

Beauticians are trained in cosmetology — the art of beauty treatments. They are skilled at facials, waxing, threading, bleaching, basic cleanup treatments and makeup. What they are not trained in is medical diagnosis or medical-grade procedures.

Appropriate for: Routine beauty maintenance, basic facials, waxing, threading, bridal makeup.

Not appropriate for: Acne treatment, pigmentation, hair loss, mole removal, laser procedures, chemical peels, or any skin concern that requires medical assessment.

Risk: Beauticians sometimes offer treatments like chemical peels, laser or dermarolling without medical training. These procedures can cause burns, scarring and worsening pigmentation when not performed correctly.

Skin Clinic / Medi-Spa

This is the grey area. The term "skin clinic" in India is unregulated — anyone can open one. Some skin clinics are run by qualified dermatologists. Many are not. They may be run by non-doctors entirely.

What to check: Is the clinic run by an MD (Doctor of Medicine) in Dermatology? Are procedures performed by or directly supervised by a qualified dermatologist?

MD Dermatologist

An MD Dermatologist has completed MBBS (5.5 years) followed by a 3-year postgraduate MD degree specifically in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy. This is the highest qualification for skin care in India and requires passing rigorous national examinations.

An MD Dermatologist can:

  • Diagnose and treat all medical skin conditions
  • Prescribe appropriate medications including oral and topical treatments
  • Perform and supervise all cosmetic and laser procedures safely
  • Identify when a skin lesion needs biopsy or further investigation
  • Treat hair, nail and scalp disorders medically

At Skin First — Both Doctors Hold MD Dermatology

Dr. Jeet Gandhi and Dr. Noopur Jain are both qualified MD Dermatologists. Both are Gold Medalist in Dermatology. Every treatment at Skin First is performed or directly supervised by them. We do not delegate medical procedures to non-medical staff.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Anywhere in Surat

  • What is the qualification of the doctor performing my treatment?
  • Is the treating doctor an MD in Dermatology?
  • Who actually performs the procedure — the doctor or a technician?
  • What laser machine are you using ?
  • How much experience does the treating Dermatologist have?

Your skin is not something to experiment with. The small savings from choosing an unqualified provider can cost significantly more to fix later.

At Skin First Skin & Hair Clinic, Vesu, Surat — you are always treated by MD Dermatologists.

Why Is My Acne Not Going Away Despite Trying Everything? A Dermatologist in Surat Explains

This is one of the most common things we hear at Skin First: "Doctor, I've tried everything and nothing is working." If this sounds like you, know that you are not alone — and more importantly, there is a reason your acne isn't clearing, and there is a solution.

The Most Common Reasons Acne Doesn't Clear

1. You're Treating the Wrong Type of Acne

Not all acne is the same. There are different types — comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads), inflammatory acne (red, painful pimples), nodulo-cystic acne (deep, painful lumps) and hormonal acne. Each type requires a different treatment approach. Using the wrong product for your type of acne is one of the most common reasons for treatment failure.

2. Over-the-Counter Products Are Not Strong Enough

Salicylic acid face washes and benzoyl peroxide creams from the pharmacy are designed for mild, superficial acne. If your acne is moderate or severe, these products simply don't have the concentration or formulation needed to make a significant difference. You need prescription-strength treatments.

3. Hormonal Acne Needs Hormonal Treatment

If your acne flares around your periods, is concentrated on the jawline and chin, and started in your mid-20s or later — it's likely hormonal. No topical cream alone will resolve hormonal acne. It requires treatment that addresses the underlying hormonal imbalance, which only a dermatologist or gynaecologist can prescribe.

4. You're Using Too Many Products

The internet is full of skincare advice. Many patients come to Skin First using 6–8 different products simultaneously — often with conflicting active ingredients that irritate the skin and worsen acne. Keeping it simple is usually better.

5. Your Skincare Routine Is Making It Worse

Common mistakes include: over-washing the face (strips natural oils, triggers more oil production), using heavy or comedogenic moisturisers, using harsh scrubs on active acne, and not using sunscreen (sun damage worsens post-acne marks).

6. Diet and Lifestyle Factors

High glycaemic index foods (white rice, bread, sugar, maida), dairy products and chronic stress have all been linked to acne worsening in susceptible individuals. These aren't the primary cause — but they can significantly undermine treatment results.

7. You're Stopping Treatment Too Soon

Acne treatments take time. Most prescription treatments require 6–12 weeks to show significant improvement. Many patients stop after 2–3 weeks, concluding the treatment "doesn't work."

What Actually Clears Acne

  • A correct diagnosis of your specific acne type
  • Prescription topical treatments (retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid) where appropriate
  • Oral medications for moderate to severe acne (antibiotics or in some cases isotretinoin)
  • Hormonal treatment for hormonal acne in women
  • In-clinic procedures: chemical peels, carbon laser facial, comedone extraction
  • A simplified, non-comedogenic skincare routine
  • Patience and consistency

What About Acne Scars?

If acne is left untreated for too long, it causes permanent scarring. At Skin First, we treat both active acne and acne scars. It's always better to treat acne early — before scarring occurs.

If your acne has not improved in 6 weeks despite treatment, see Dr. Noopur Jain at Skin First Skin & Hair Clinic, Vesu, Surat for a proper diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.

Best Skincare Routine for Surat's Humid Weather (Dermatologist-Approved)

Surat's climate is hot and humid for most of the year, with intense summers and a heavy monsoon season. This combination creates specific challenges for skin — excess oil production, clogged pores, sweat-related rashes, acne flares and fungal infections. The skincare routine that works in Delhi or Mumbai may not work here. Here's what Dr. Noopur Jain recommends for Surat residents.

Morning Routine

Step 1 — Gentle Cleanser

Use a gentle, foaming, non-comedogenic face wash suited to your skin type. In Surat's humidity, most people benefit from a mild gel cleanser that removes excess oil without over-stripping the skin. Avoid harsh scrubs in the morning — they irritate already-warm skin.

Step 2 — Light Water-Based Moisturiser

Even oily skin needs moisturiser. In Surat's heat, opt for a water-based, oil-free gel moisturiser. If you skip moisturiser, your skin compensates by producing more oil — making things worse.

Step 3 — Sunscreen (Non-Negotiable)

This is the single most important step. Surat's sun exposure is intense year-round. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 PA+++ sunscreen every morning — even indoors, even on cloudy days. Look for a matte or gel formulation to avoid a greasy finish in the heat. Reapply every 3–4 hours if outdoors.

Evening Routine

Step 1 — Double Cleanse (on heavy pollution or sweat days)

Start with a micellar water or oil cleanser to remove sunscreen, pollution particles and sweat. Follow with your regular face wash. This two-step cleanse is particularly valuable during Surat's summer and monsoon months.

Step 2 — Active Ingredient (if prescribed)

Evening is the time for any prescription actives — retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs or BHAs. These should only be used as directed by your dermatologist. Do not self-prescribe these ingredients.

Step 3 — Moisturiser

A slightly richer moisturiser can be used at night. In Surat's humidity, even the night moisturiser should be non-comedogenic.

Surat-Specific Skin Tips

  • Monsoon fungal infections — Surat's monsoon creates ideal conditions for fungal skin infections. Keep skin dry, especially in skin folds. If you notice itchy, circular rashes — see a dermatologist promptly.
  • Textile dust and pollution — Surat's textile industry generates fine dust particles. Double cleansing in the evening is important if you work near or in textile areas.
  • AC skin dryness — Prolonged AC exposure dries out skin. Keep a facial mist and drink adequate water. Use a humidifier if possible.
  • Summer heat rashes — Prickly heat is common in Surat summers. Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing and use a calamine lotion or light powder on affected areas.
  • Hard water effects — Surat's hard water can strip natural oils. Use a shower filter and a mild, pH-balanced cleanser.

What to Avoid

  • Heavy, cream-based foundations and moisturisers in summer — they clog pores
  • Skipping sunscreen because it feels heavy — find a lighter formulation instead

Pigmentation and Dark Spots After Summer — Treatment Options at a Surat Clinic

Every year after Surat's intense summer, we see a significant spike in patients coming to Skin First with new dark spots, worsened melasma and uneven skin tone. The reason is simple: months of intense UV exposure triggers excess melanin production — and the effects are most visible in September and October when the tan fades and the underlying pigmentation becomes apparent.

Why Surat Summer Causes Pigmentation

Surat experiences some of the highest UV index levels in Gujarat from March to June. UV radiation is the primary trigger for melanin overproduction. In susceptible individuals — those with a family history of pigmentation, hormonal changes or post-inflammatory skin — even moderate sun exposure causes significant darkening.

Types of Summer Pigmentation We Treat

Sun Tan

Surface darkening from UV exposure. The most superficial form — responds quickly to chemical peels and brightening treatments. Usually resolves within 4–6 weeks of treatment.

Freckles and Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines)

Discrete small dark spots, usually on sun-exposed areas. These are deeper than a tan and need more targeted treatment — photo facial (IPL) or Q-switched laser.

Melasma

The most stubborn form of pigmentation. Melasma is triggered or worsened by sun exposure and is particularly common in women in their 30s and 40s. Summer significantly worsens existing melasma. It requires a combination approach and strict sun protection to treat effectively.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Dark marks left after acne, rashes or insect bites that were worsened by summer sun exposure. These respond well to depigmenting creams and chemical peels.

Treatment Options at Skin First

  • Chemical Peels — Our first line for most pigmentation. Glycolic, lactic and mandelic acid peels exfoliate and brighten. A series of 4–6 peels spaced 2–3 weeks apart gives excellent results.
  • Photo Facial (IPL) — Intense Pulsed Light specifically targets melanin deposits. Highly effective for sun spots and freckles.
  • Skin Polishing (Microdermabrasion) — Removes the dull, pigmented top layer to reveal brighter skin underneath.
  • Prescription Depigmenting Creams — Combinations of hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinol and niacinamide prescribed by Dr. Noopur Jain to specifically target your type of pigmentation.
  • Oral Supplements — Tranexamic acid (oral and topical) has strong evidence for melasma and is prescribed where appropriate.

The Most Important Thing — Sun Protection

No pigmentation treatment works without consistent, daily, rigorous sun protection. SPF 50 PA+++ broad-spectrum sunscreen must be applied every morning and reapplied every 3–4 hours outdoors. Without this, pigmentation returns within weeks regardless of what treatment you've had.

When to Start Treatment

Post-summer is actually the ideal time to start pigmentation treatment — UV exposure is lower in the cooler months, your skin can tolerate active treatments better, and you have time to achieve results before the next summer.

Fungal Skin Infections in Monsoon Surat — Causes, Prevention and Treatment

Every monsoon season, Skin First sees a sharp rise in patients with fungal skin infections. Surat's monsoon months — June through September — combine high humidity, warmth and moisture in clothing, creating perfect conditions for fungi to thrive on the skin. The good news: fungal infections are completely treatable. The key is recognising them early and treating them correctly.

Why Monsoon Increases Fungal Infections in Surat

  • High ambient humidity keeps skin moist, especially in skin folds
  • Wet clothes and shoes from rain create prolonged skin moisture
  • Sweating increases — fungi love warm, moist environments
  • Reduced sunlight exposure means less natural UV-based killing of surface fungi
  • Surat's dense urban areas and public transport increase exposure

Common Fungal Infections We Treat

Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)

Despite the name, this has nothing to do with worms. It's a fungal infection that causes circular, ring-shaped, itchy red patches on the skin. It spreads easily through skin contact, shared towels and clothing.

Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)

Fungal infection of the groin area — extremely common in Surat's monsoon due to sweat and tight synthetic clothing. Causes intense itching, redness and a rash with a clear border spreading outward.

Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)

Fungal infection between the toes and on the soles, worsened by wet footwear during monsoon. Causes peeling, itching, burning and sometimes blisters.

Pityriasis Versicolor

A yeast infection causing light or dark patches on the chest, back and shoulders — very common in Surat's humid climate. Often mistaken for vitiligo. Responds well to antifungal treatment.

Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis)

Thickening, discolouration and crumbling of toenails due to fungal infection. Harder to treat than skin infections — requires prolonged antifungal therapy.

Warning: Steroid Creams Worsen Fungal Infections

This is a critical point. Many over-the-counter creams sold in Surat pharmacies — and even some prescribed elsewhere — contain steroid combinations that temporarily relieve itching while allowing the fungal infection to spread aggressively. This leads to Tinea Incognito — a masked, widespread infection that is much harder to treat. If you have a rash that briefly improves on a cream but keeps coming back and spreading — stop the cream and see a dermatologist immediately.

Treatment

Fungal infections are treated with antifungal medications — topical creams for localised infections, and oral antifungals for widespread, resistant or nail infections. Dr. Jeet Gandhi will identify the exact type of fungal infection and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Most skin fungal infections clear within 2–4 weeks of correct treatment.

Prevention During Surat's Monsoon

  • Change out of wet clothes immediately
  • Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing — avoid synthetic fabrics in the groin and underarm areas
  • Dry skin folds thoroughly after bathing — a hairdryer on cool setting works well for the groin and feet
  • Use antifungal dusting powder on prone areas during monsoon
  • Never share towels, socks or footwear
  • Dry shoes thoroughly before wearing again
  • Wear slippers or sandals in public areas, gyms and changing rooms

If you suspect a fungal infection, see Dr. Jeet Gandhi at Skin First Skin & Hair Clinic, Vesu, Surat. Do not self-treat with over-the-counter combination creams.

How to Choose the Right Dermatologist in Surat — Questions to Ask Before Booking

Surat has hundreds of clinics and practitioners offering skin treatments. Choosing the wrong one — based on price, proximity or a social media ad — can mean wasted money, delayed treatment and in some cases, damage that needs to be corrected. Here's how to make an informed choice.

Question 1 — What Is the Doctor's Qualification?

This is the most important question. The qualification you are looking for is MD Dermatology (or equivalent: DVD, DDV, DNB Dermatology). This means the doctor completed a full 3-year postgraduate specialisation in dermatology after their MBBS.

Be cautious of titles like "Skin Specialist," "Cosmetologist" or "Aesthetic Physician" without an MD in Dermatology. These titles are not protected by law in India and can be used by anyone.

Question 2 — Who Actually Performs the Treatment?

In many skin clinics and medispas, the doctor conducts a brief consultation but the actual laser or procedure is performed by a trained technician. Ask directly: "Will the doctor be in the room during my laser treatment?" Medical procedures should always be performed or directly supervised by the treating physician.

Question 3 — What Machine Are You Using ?

There is a significant quality difference between medical-grade laser machines and cheaper alternatives. Ask what machine is used for your specific treatment.

Question 4 —Can I understand the condition I am being treated for?

Any clinic confident in their Dermatologist will be able to explain the condition properly along with the tratment alternatives. They will not be in a hurry to start the treatment before explaining the condiion.

Question 5 — What Happens If I Have a Complication?

Complications from skin treatments — though rare when performed correctly — can occur. Is the doctor available? Is there a follow-up protocol? A good clinic will have clear answers.

Question 6 — Are Results Realistic?

Be very wary of any clinic that promises guaranteed results, 100% clearance or dramatic before/afters that seem too good to be true. Honest dermatologists will give you realistic expectations based on your specific skin condition.

Green Flags When Choosing a Skin Clinic in Surat

  • MD Dermatologist credentials displayed clearly
  • Transparent pricing provided before treatment
  • Thorough consultation before any procedure
  • Proper explanation offered before laser treatments
  • Clean, clinical environment
  • Genuine Google reviews from real patients

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Aggressive selling before assessment
  • Heavily discounted treatments promoted on social media without qualification details
  • No consultation — going straight to treatment
  • Unable or unwilling to share doctor's qualifications
  • Treatments performed by untrained staff

At Skin First

Both Dr. Jeet Gandhi and Dr. Noopur Jain are MD Dermatologists. We display our qualifications transparently. Every procedure is performed or directly supervised by our dermatologists. We do not pressure patients into packages and we give honest, realistic treatment expectations.
